Heritage

Long and colourful history

As Kent’s County Town Maidstone has a rich historical heritage and a diverse architectural landscape which has evolved since Medieval times.  Early industry developed around the navigable parts of the river and it was heavily used for both transport and for industrial purposes.

The river crossing points in the heart of town made this the perfect place for market trading and for a break in pilgrimage journeys between Canterbury and London. This unique position encouraged trade with London and from a village community it developed into a prosperous town.

Maidstone has continued to encourage trade, from its humble beginnings with beer, paper and tanning it has moved on to banking, finance and media industries. Sometimes overlooked, Maidstone has a long history and an enviable commercial heritage.
